I'm used to thinking of a sanctuary as a physical location, as in a church. From time to time in my part of the world, an immigrant has to seek sanctuary in a church so the immigration authorities cannot deport him. Nevertheless, you may be quite right in the concept of sanctuary as being an escape of some form. When I brought up the question of sanctuaries in the first place, I meant a hiding place such as the dog's home, Peter Duck's cave, Dick's blind, etc. rather than a conceptual place.
