I fear it seems abrupt because there was no more. In a way it would have been good to have a final fling. I know all the books are self-contained stories in their own right, so it didn't need a Harry-Potter-esque finale, but something to mark that we wouldn't be checking in on their lives again would have been nice (Coots in the North may well have performed that role well). Then again, I suppose, in the spirit of 'Swallows and Amazons Forever' it's good that there wasn't a 'breaking up' finale with adulthood looming and adventures brought to a close.
I'm a big fan of Great Northern? though I know some Ransome lovers are less keen on the book.
