Can I get this discussion back to basics? What I was getting at in my initial post was not the quite natural and inevitable branching off of sub-threads, but the deliberate or careless type of 'queue-jumping' - ie 'pushing in' a posting on exactly the same point (or, as happened to me, on exactly the same italic quote) above the original follow-up and well after it, time-wise. What then happens is that other TarBoarders post follow-ups to the 'usurper' message, forming a lengthy chain, thus pushing the original posting ever downwards into oblivion. This seems to me to be genuinely 'bad form' (if you'll excuse this rather sniffy phrase), and could be even more off-putting for a newcomer.
it's just a feature of TarBoard
No, it's just a feature of some TarBoarders, IMO
