What I was getting at in my initial post was not the quite natural and
inevitable branching off of sub-threads, but the deliberate or careless
type of 'queue-jumping' - ie 'pushing in' a posting on exactly the same
point (or, as happened to me, on exactly the same italic quote) above the
original follow-up and well after it, time-wise.
I guess my problem is that I've never seen TarBoard as a queue. It must
be something to do with my East European roots. Show us a reasonably
long queue and we will elect a queue committee and run it with Stalinist
discipline. Show us a short queue and all we see is a scrum.
