Mah hoose is on the rivah is, I have been informed, pure Virginian. Canadians, particularly in Ontario, say hoose, aboot, etc. as a holdover from Lowland Scots. In British Columbia, where I live, I have been told that our accent (yes, there is one!) sounds close to the Californian accent. Why? Because after the Gold Rush of 1849 gold was discovered in central B.C. so many of the goldminers hurried up here, bringing their accent with them. Several things wrong with this explanation, but I suppose it's as good as any.
