Considering AR's custom of taking existing places and altering them a bit for his fictional imaginary stories, one can perhaps make a case for the names: "Lanehead" and "Beckfoot". There is that similarity and there is that reversal of meaning. Where LANE is changed from a path or trail to walk on to become a BECK to put a small boat on. And the "HEAD" gets swapped with its exact opposite, the "FOOT". So when making his changes to adapt a real into an imaginary entity, this name seems to follow the pattern. Take the real name, go for opposites, and come up with the imaginary name.

From pictures (I've never been there) from the LAKELANDCAM collection I see various views of Lanehead. The feature that draws attention is there on a corner of an upper room where a lot of glass permits one to look out over the lake and get a wide view. This grand view from here may have suggested the concept of the North Pole as a lookout point.

That window would have made a great signal tower from which to flash Morse signals, likely visible from quite some distance away. The D's certainly used the North Pole for that purpose quite well.

Perhaps what we need to discuss is the plumbing in Lanehead.
