I'm probably thinking of the same TV series as you, though my
recollection is that it was in 1963 rather than 1965
(assuming you're talking, as I am, about when it was shown in Britain).
A two-year difference in the 1960s, when I was in my teens,
seems more significant to me than a 10-year difference now!

In a message here a year or so ago I compared its theme music favourably
to that of the 1970s film, though others disagreed with my somewhat
negative description of the latter music.

I'm very bad at describing music but your "robust Vaughan Williams"
seems just right. At my secondary school we used to sing a hymn
called "Hills of the North, rejoice" - does anyone know it?
I would say that the music of the 1960s series was roughly like an
adaptation, into a more forceful style, of the tune to which we sang
that hymn.

It could even be that this idea was present in the mind of whoever
composed the music - highly appropriate for a Lake District story.
(I assume it ws specially written.)
