I can only speak to my family's experiences here in Oregon, USA. My mother discovered them in Charlotte, NC in the 1930's & eagerly awaited publication of the later books in the series. I discovered them in my local library in the 60's & was able to read all of them only when we vacationed in Charlotte--the one time I did practically nothing but read at my grandmother's house! In the 70's I purchased an entire set while on a school trip to Victoria, BC; they weren't available for sale in the US. At that time, I knew a handful of peers who read some or all of the series. My children have read them, but we almost never find anyone here of their generation who has heard of them. (We have, however, suggested them to friends regularly!) I sincerely hope that more children in the UK stumble upon them than seem to do so here.
