I wonder how AR would have treated the current English "summer" weather? Hardly a day goes by without rain.

I believe (I may be wrong, but I think I read it somewhere) that this summer has, on a historical basis, been fairly normal. It's just that since 1976 we've got used to exceptionally hot summers.

But read the descriptions of the weather in June 1944, which delayed D-Day. It was ghastly. And for some years after that.

I used to ride a motorbike in the '50s and '60s, and I well remember how unwarm and undry it could be in the British summers.

And I agree with you about the splendid opening of PP, although following on from others I'd put in a good word for B6. Definitely a splendid, densely plotted book. Dick in the darkroom is the scene that sticks out for me; for many years my favourite scene, until I got older/more ancient and started to enjoy other aspects more.
