Ah yes, speculation. But for me there would never be any relationships between John and Nancy or Peggy more complicated than the stories themselves. I read the books first before I knew much about girls and naturally projected my innocence onto the characters. Since they have never changed for me, I can't wrap my mind around their possible futures, romantic or not. My reaction to John and Peggy's romance is about what Roger's reaction might have been.

GN is one of the real stories, it seems to me, because it is entirely possible. ML and PD are straining the bounds of the "willing suspension of disbelief". One failing that ML has for me is that the characters show relatively little emotion at the loss of the Wild Cat. Surely one of them, at least, would have been sobbing. Perhaps Peggy would have laid her head on John's shoulder, and mumbled some expression of regret, with tears choking her voice.
