So why can't the plot include a slightly generous approach to "early May", and work as well as does AR's combination of lakes & places around them to create "The Lake"? All authors are allowed to take some liberty in writing fiction, even if we enjoy treating his works as factual literature :-) As to fouling, it was a device to bring the crew to shore, necessary in finding the birds, and it is yet one more bit of boating information for AR to "teach" his readers.

And if AR had left the story to a later time in the fictional lives of our cast of teens, he might have had to add in something in the way of budding romantic feelings, which I feel sure he would have abhorred--after all, none of them ever have even the slightest crush on anyone. Susan certainly could have seen Jim Brading in that light, but it is John who is most impressed with him, and then for his sailing skills!
