Thanks, Robert and Beck. Who was it who said that Britain and America are divided by a common language? I had a dream last night in which a Ransome story was translated into American English. The original dialogue was something like this:
Titty: 'I say, look here'
Susan: 'What is it?'
Dick: 'Look, you can work it out if you try'
Nancy: 'Come on, spit it out, prof.'
In American:
Titty: 'Hey!'
Susan: 'Huh?'
Dick: 'Go figure'
Nancy: 'Excuse me?'
Well at least the American version takes up less space. If we did this to Swallowdale it would end up as a short story.
