Saw several Great Northern Divers - AKA Common Loons here in the US - while on holiday in Maine a couple of weeks ago. I hadn't appreciated how large they are until we saw a couple really close up. And that's after carving one from wood for my wife last Christmas!! They make a wonderful noise when they call; really nice to listen to if you're lying in bed at night, window open, with the water lapping outside... :-)
