I give thanks for J.K. Rowling for writing the Harry Potter books every time I see my son with his nose in a book. My son had showed very little interest in reading though his sisters had read quite early and we were becoming worried whether he had some sort of problem, It was only when he tried Harry Potter at the age of eight or so that he suddenly became hooked on reading.

Since then he has read many books and actively sought out new ones. After Harry Potter, he read The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings and now buys his own books. Usually they are not ones I would have chosen, none of my children like many of the books I like, but he spends his own money on books he wants. There is hope for him after all!

I know its anecdotal, but he tells me that many of his friends also started reading with Harry Potter. Those Rowling books being bought are being read, I assure you, and I enjoy them too, they aren't great literature but they are a easy and enjoyable read if you take them on their own terms.
