Successors to AR: For me as an adult, the Miss Read books filled some of the same desire to submerse myself into a small & simple world based around older English village life. Filled with characters one "knows", and very well-written. Also D.E. Stevenson's novels set in England & Scotland. Smart characters with interesting thoughts, beautiful scenery descriptions, small farms & villages, lots of walking to get places.

While these aren't exactly in the same genre as the AR canon--no children, no adventures, nothing made-up--they offer much of what we all love about "the books": a nice turn of wording that lets the author's humor and life experience show through, a view into a different era and its lifestyle, with everyday people doing everyday things. Try them with a steaming mug of tea!
