I started with Enid Blyton too and moved on reading my first Ransome at age 8 or so, but I didn't really start reading the rest until I was a bit older. My parents didn't encourage me all that much as they didn't particularly like his writing and I suspect they thought I spent too much time reading. As a result, my opinion is that adults shouldn't judge children's reading, they should just encourage it never mind what you think of it, you don't have to read it! I don't ever condemn any book my children are interested in. I will discuss it with them and sometimes read it if pressed. I will also recommend (usually unsuccessfully) other books I think might interest them.
My son started on J.K. Rowling and I consider her books to be a higher reading level than Blyton, especially the later Potter books which have grown with my children, not necessarily linguistically but the emotional and moral and ethical content.
