I started reading S&A at age seven - the first sentence "Roger aged seven" hooked me into the series and to being a lifelong Roger supporter.
My American godmother started me with SA and then PD; her own sons had enjoyed them. My reading was then submerged by a welter of model railway and railway magazines and books (although I also read through the complete SA series) and it was not until I boarded at school that I read more. The school library was large with many books by prolific old boy writers. However it was deficient in science fiction books, these I had to buy or borrow from other boarders.
Whilst the SA books have always been an attraction, I think that for the present young generation there is a greater elapsed time disconnect than for those of us who have a few years under their belts. For them the SA series are historical novels and they are viewed in the same vein as Treasure Island.
