I can't recall in which book the term "in irons" might have been used, but it sounds like the sort of expression AR might have used. For the less nautical amongst us (and to help readers to identify the appropriate book for Samantha) the expression "in irons" when sailing means that the boat has come head to wind, is not moving forward, and the sails will not fill on either tack. It probably comes from the term to be manacled in irons in a cell - a typical naval punishment when life at sea was harsher than now!
