So do I, though his cosmology is rather bleak and there is a dark streak to all his writings.

Yup, that's something I like about his writing. A dearth of soft stuff.

But to get to the nub of it; I read novels for enjoyment. Cosmology and the nature of the world are for the LHC and Hubble. And on that basis AR and Anthony Powell knock Pullman and Rowling into a cocked hat. Always remembering that 'de gustibus non est disputandum'; I'm not looking for agreement. Hell, I know I'm right... Don't we all?
