I agree with Pam about Rowling being "reasonably enjoyable". I'm afraid that "reasonably" wasn't quite enough to get me to read very far into "Philosopher's Stone". My constant feeling was "Hey - this is a book for children - I can tell, and I don't belong here". I have never felt that way with Ransome. Ransome 'lets you in' straight away - it's your territory if you want it, whatever your age or background. Another children's writer who does that is Hugh Lofting, although his style is aimed at younger readers than AR. As a child I loved the Dolittle books. It is sad that they are regarded as a little bit un-PC now.
