At that date, possession of a copy of The Riddle was a statement that you were a Corinthian yachtsman; any visitor who also messed about in boats would identify a kindred spirit immediately.
I notice that Alex aged 13 2/3 has yet to pick up the copy that a thoughtful parent has put on his bookcase.
The first chapter is almost impossible to get through, for a first time reader, today. After that it is fine.
