Fidra Books have just republished THE FAR-DISTANT OXUS in paperback, with Ransome's introduction and a new introduction too mentioning both Pamela Whitlock and her husband John Bell and their role as Ransome's literary executors.
I understand they hope to republish the other two Oxus books in due course.
This will be a great relief to me since a friend of mine has read all three books to each of her three children (as well as The Twelve of course), so I have been lending her my copies for some 15 years and shall be delighted that she can have her own copies at last!
Did anyone else see the bit in the Observer a few weeks ago in which one of William Golding's sons said that his father adored reading Swallows and Amazons books to them (and they adored listening to him read!). He raised the theory that LORD OF THE FLIES was an inverted version of S&A rather than, as is more popularly supposed, THE CORAL ISLAND.
