Just to expand, slightly, in Victorian and Edwardian yachting circles, to be "Corinthian" meant specifically that one did not employ any paid crew members.
The term persists in the titles of some yacht clubs.
Carruthers has no experience of "Corinthian" yachting until he joins the "Dulcibella".
