I think he also used real life pictures for many of his illustrations. We know, when instructing Clifford Webb for the early SA illustrations, he annotated postcards of Friars Crag on Derwentwater and the Gondola on Coniston for Webb to use as a basis for his illustrations.
Possibly there are, as yet, undiscovered postcards or snapshots of other locations that AR used as a basis for other illustrations.
