The MARGOLETTA and I are having a fine time trapping Dungeness crab these days. The best time is between about an hour before and an hour after high slack tide. I've found a pretty good spot near a navigation buoy - that helps find the trap's float which can be very difficult in choppy seas. The easiest, and very good bait to use is turkey legs - don't ask me how crab acquired a taste for turkey but there you go. The water is about 60 feet deep. It is usually too much trouble to go out in the MARGO' so I take the Avon RIB and usually end up soaked. The little buggers can give one a serious nip, so I use leather welding gloves to sort them out. It is illegal to take female crab, but the males make up for it - and usually run at least seven inches across the shell. One makes a fine meal when boiled in salt water, cooled in the fridge, and then enjoyed dipped in melted butter and a bottle of white wine.
But, I don't suppose Peter Duck had any white wine or butter. Maybe he had to eat them raw.
