I think that the 'two dozen frenzied Tarboarders' is meant to be a joke. Although it is possible to imagine one - or at the most two - TarBoarders in a frenzy, a whole half dozen goes beyond the powers of even my frenzied imagination.

Peter's account of the last plumbing controversy reminds me of the time (apologies to those who know the story and for going OT) when I was involved in rescuing a branchline in the South of England. British Railways countered my efforts by starting to lift the track and the local branch of the Ramblers Association organised a 'sit-in' in protest. At the appointed time half a dozen very genteel, and slightly elderly ladies, arrived and placed themselves at my disposal. The scrap contractors took the day off. The local press announced a victory. The people who care about such things in London denounced me as 'a political huckster and a threat to Parliamentary democracy'. My phone was tapped and my railway society was put on a black list as far as cooperation with government institutions was concerned. I can only surmise that the person in London responsible for reading press cuttings and typing them up for his superiors wrote up that I was in charge of a frenzied mob of pitchfork wielding revolutionaries.
