If I may answer 3 posts here:

3rdamazon: No offence taken at all and it is my fault for not positioning my last posting correctly.

Mike D: Thanks. I mostly don’t bother either, these days. Not because there is anything wrong with TarBoard as a facility – it is run smoothly and well, but because I am tired of oblique put-downs. You end up feeling you just can’t say the right thing, and dead-pan humour is out.

Andyb – yes yes yes. A whiff of oxygen!

the discussion on BP was terminally boring
Phew – can you imagine the reaction if I’d said that? I am most interested to see what happens now – a test in discrimination, methinks.

The Tarboard Arms and St Tarboards metaphors can mislead, if taken too literally but not as likely to bring disappointment as seeing Tarboard as an electronic version of Mixed Moss
A fair summing up, with the irony that I am currently co-editing this year’s Moss:-) I agree that TarBoard sails a different course from Moss and that is right. The Tarboard Arms and School metaphors were thought up by me in a different context and were never intended as any sort of matrix. They are best forgotten, as these concepts tend to encourage a false alpha-male bonhomie, and tend to discourage women (and many men) from joining in (QED).
