on a discussion board one expects a fair amount of cut and thrust.

Jock - I totally agree. The Tarboarder you refer to as regards sailing was Laurence Monkhouse, who died fairly recently. I was on friendly personal terms with him, and like many others, we did pull dear Laurence's leg a bit. IIRC, the 'drowning' business was a bit of tongue-in-cheek "cutting" and "thrusting". Ditto John Nichols, with whom I had a leg-pulling "cutting and thrusting" exchange recently about visiting all the Beckfoots in Cumbria (not, I hasten to add, to inspect the plumbing). You intruded into this discussion in order to chide me for never having visited the Ravenglass & Eskdale Rly (in fact I spent a fortnight's holiday on it some years ago and know every inch of it.) And I suggest that even the ultra-gentle Ed K should expect a fair amount of cut and thrust, like the rest of us. Jock - you advocate "cutting and thrusting" but you evidently can't tolerate me doing it!
