We're reading Great Northern? right now and have come across the term
'ghillie'. I looked it up in my Webster's Tenth and find that it means
a fishing or hunting guide. David (my husband) seems to think it is
derogatory, from the context (a ghillie couldn't write English). I
didn't get that at all - it seems to be merely descriptive. Any
comment? Is it one of those words whose usage has changed over time?
In other words, who is right in this minor marital dispute?
Also, I have just returned from a professional conference in Minneapolis
and brought home lots of fuzzy little divers - we call them loons (is
this a US/UK difference?)and they are the state bird of Minnesota.
