I don't think we ever answered Ed's request as to why we take stones to the top of mountains to make cairns.
Stones are placed on Fells as waymarks. The route up the Old Man of Coniston from Boo Tarn is a prime example. One can get to the top, a much nicer way than up the mines path, simply by following each cairn.
