You might enjoy some of the 19th/early-20th century British authors, where surveying the Empire was a common job. As an example, Rudyard Kipling's Kim was trained as a surveyor. One of my favorites is the author Ganpat- ML Gompertz. In his book, High Snow, the male protagonist is surveying in Ladakh- at one point, a rediscovered survey cairn is topped with a prayer flag.
