Ed - a few years ago I went up Scafell Pike for the first (and so far the only) time. On the tops we were in low cloud and without the presence of a cairn of sorts it would not have been clear where the summit was. When we arrived it was deserted and we enjoyed a few minutes being the highest people on land in England. Then small groups of people appeared out of the mist from all sides and the solitude was broken.

On some mountains the summit peak is unmistakeable whatever the weather. On others where the highest area is plateau-like, with limited visibility it is by no means clear whether you have reached the summit point, and in those situations a cairn is really helpful.
