As a follow up to my last post suggesting Lowick as a possible prototype for Bigland. A little research in AR's autobiography shows the following.
AR used to drink at the Red Lion in Lowick Bridge, sometimes with Lascelles Abercrombie, on their way from Cartmel to Coniston. In addition this is the pub at which AR used to pick up the clay pipes left for him by the charcoal burners. They would place the pipes with the wood in the pitstead before firing and the subsequent smoking and blackening of the clay pipes made them much sweeter to smoke.
also Lowick Bridge does have a church.
