When I lived in Cartmel we used to refer to 'Bigland' to mean Bigland Fell, an area between Cartmel and Backbarrow. Dad and I hiked from Cartmel to Grizedale, over Bigland Fell, in a day (perhaps about 10-12 hours? It was a long time ago now) so the story is perfectly plausable. The Billys must have hard tougher feet than mine though - we took the bus back from Coniston Village the next day due to the blisters...
