Perhaps JT was a Remittance Man - an emigrant subsisting on remittances from home - as he was too much of black sheep to keep around.

For the most wonderful story of Alberta's most infamous Remittance Man, Eye Opener Bob, go to www.brindleandglass.com/books/eyeopenerbob

He was an outstanding character - a journalist like AR - in Alberta's early stories.
