Most houses built on traditional lines could expect to have two major sides; a "presentation" side and a "service" side. The "presentation" side would have a front door in the middle, for receiving guests. Inside the front door there would be an "Entrance Lobby", and to one side of the lobby would be the stairs to the upper floor. The space under the stairs was/is usually used for storage of things that are not normally required on a day-to-day basis. On the "service side", the back door would normally open from the kitchen, or at least very close to it. The positioning of this door within the wall is more flexible.
