Nancy's mother talks about the house when she was a girl and so I suspect the chimneys are a lot older than 1930.
They may have burned coal as there is a refernce in WH to black snow in London which suggests soat in the air. Visit any Chinese city and you see this to this day.
Makes it very hard to breath.
reminds me of the old adage - Middle class mobility leads to improved air quality
