revised edition

My copy of Peter Duck is marked 'revised edition published in 1983' which naturally makes me curious about what exactly was revised

it obviously wasn't for language (the 'N-word' abounds and drawing of the black guy with a gorilla head would never pass muster today)

and it hardly seems for typographic accuracy ('Generallly', 'everbody', multiple missing quote marks, etc)

i searched through the board for comments on what has been revised in different books and came up with a few hits

There is a bonus - reissues in the last 2 or 3 years have been carefully revised by Dave Sewart to remove the various errors that have crept in over years of reprints

William Dashfield

There are also small differences between the editions. It was reset in 1947 and revised and reset in 1984. There are some changes between the last two - e.g. 'forgotten' replaces 'forgot' and I guess it is possible, though unlikely that they lost a sentence in 1947.

There are a few sentences that stike the ear strangely e.g. "All six boats were closed together." (on page 247 or 248 depending on edition) I'd expect 'close together', and I wonder if that crept in 1947.

I'm slightly baffled by this. My Big Six (First Edition) has the Roaring Donkey and its dyke clearly marked - an addition to the 'Northern Waters' map that was copied from Coot Club for the new book.

Owen Roberts
Random House may have economised when both editions were revised in 1982.

But in our 2000 reprint of the 1963 revised edition, the picture of Daddy on the steamer ("Ahoy! Ahoy!) should be on page 269, but it has moved to page 275.

The first picture through the porthole (("What they saw through the portholes (I) The Pilot Steamer) should be on page 251 but is on page 262.

The second picture through the porthole ("What they saw through the portholes (II) Flushing) is on page 267 (should be 265).

The picture of Goblin in the lock should be on page 275 but is, absurdly, on page 258.

"Tied up in Harbour" is in the right place on page 279.

So I guess my question is: Is there any definitive list of the differences between the different editions and revisions, and if not, could we create one?
