I have located the Allingham reference, which was earlier than I had remembered. In her "Police at the Funeral" (1931) the second paragraph of the story includes the phrase "... Inspector Stanislaus Oates, only lately promoted to the Big Five ..." (so he was only an Inspector, not Superintendent, sorry). This was nine years before "The Big Six". Doesn't necessarily mean that AR read detective fiction: it may imply that the term was a general and well-understood one at the time. Tracking down CID and Scotland Yard in various encyclopaedias hasn't helped. Guess we'll have to wait for Anne Levesque to get an answer.
