As Peter says the Walkers and Callums had fathers in secure jobs. The origins of the Blacketts' money is unknown and has been discussed before but we can assume they were adequately insulated from the effects of the depression. Many of the characters are from farming families and would have been able to grow their own food and continue to have an income from selling the surplus. There are a couple of policemen (Billy at the lake, Tedder in the Broads) also in secure jobs.

In the Broads books we have a doctor and a solicitor. We also have three boatbuilders' sons who I imagine might have suffered more from the recession than the other characters. What we don't have is any urban manual workers who I imagine were probably the worst affected group.
