How old...? (Again??)

OK folks, I can't imagine this hasn't been discussed before but I can't for the life of me find it in the old threads/archives/links... Has anyone worked out how old the children in the books are meant to be? Perhaps from a base year of 1929 say? All of them, including D's, Coots, etc. I've seen individual ages discussed but never a complete list.

The Housatonic River Pirates bug me on this point almost nightly - very, very important when you're 8 and 9.
