I am not sure what education was like in the 1930's but it cannot have been too different to education in the late 1940's and 1950's.
At prep school, prior to going to public school, I started French at age 5 and Latin at age 7. Presumably Roger and Titty might have done the same and this might account for their ability later on.
However I sympathise with John, although I had an early start with Latin - I was never any good at it and people of younger years with some ability could easily do better than I.

Latin is a language

And now it's killing me!

Possibly not a ditty to recite near Missee Lee - I might have to be made to indulge in some gratuitous head rolling!
