By the time we have read the whole of the SA series we know much more about Beckfoot, than any other house occupied by our heroes. We know that that Lanehead provided the young AR with a real life refuge and I strongly suspect that he was returning there in his imagination when he was writing PM.

I would maintain that while Beckfoot's location, occupants and 'rich man's toys' are drawn from other sources, its ambiance, and possibly even its interior layout, are closely based on Lanehead in the days that AR was beginning his career as a writer and stayed there as a guest of the Collingwoods.

What do others think?
