I hardly think that having John carry off the impersonation of Dick was implausible. After all, Jemmerling's crew only had the briefest look at either John or Dick. They would have gone for the obvious, the glasses. John and Nancy took great care to keep far enough away from Jemmerling's sailor that he couldn't get a good look at them. And Jemmerling obviously took everyone to be simple types, easily swayed by money and incapable of operating at the level of sophistication that a deception would involve. Witness that he also tried to use his "stature" and the promise of fame to convince The McGinty to let him have the eggs and birds.
