Crouching in a hollow on top of something has to be one of the universal thrills. I remember the winter of 1947, when the gutters froze up on our house. My dad went up with a friend, some roofing pitch and a Primus blowtorch. I was seven and fascinated by the whole Primus magic; the blue meths startup leading to rapid pumping and the shuddering, roaring paraffin flame. They worked high up in the wide Victorian gutter while I crouched in the relative warmth of a trap door leading onto the roof, under a freezing, velvety night sky. Below us, the lights of Kensington were spread out. Sixty years ago, not nearly so bright and so many as they would be today, but still one of my most vivid memories of childhood.

From the height, domination. From the hollow, safety.
