I don't know that the Swallows, Amazons and Ds were particularly well dressed for an Arctic hike across snowy Greenland. I seem to recall shorts and skirts.
Certainly I recall wearing shorts at school in the winter of 1963 and finding my legs getting very cold even on the short breaks outside at my school. The school authorities did eventually relent and let us wear long trousers.
