I had a feeling that this article was on the Internet somewhere, and \i have found it in the achives of the University of Hong Kong.

The author, Dr A.D. Blue, D. Litt. (Glasgow) was in his younger days a ship's engineer, in due course Chief Engineer, with the China Navigation Company Limited ("CNCo") whom I had the pleasure of working for, myself. What Archie does not say here is that he was himself one of the three officers from the NEWCHANG who were held hostage for five and a half months (because the company would not pay a ransom-in the end the Japanese Government paid the ransom).

AR would almost certainly have travelled by CNCo steamer during his visit to China.

Archie Blue and Graham Torrible of the Yangtse Gorges were legends in my day.
