I think you are probably right. This was the period of the change over from pocket watches to wrist watches - wrist watches "came in" in WW1 because they were so much more convenient, in the conditions of trench warfare, and many pocker watches were modified to be worn on the wrist. The winding stem has to be at 3.00 on a wrist watch.
It is interesting that only John has a watch in SA; in SW, Roger's watch is broken ("it always is") and is being repaired in Ipswich.
