Going off on a tangent for a minute, I inherited a gold hunter that my grandfather gave to my elder uncle Les on Les' 45th birthday. Les was born in the wonderful winter of '95, celebrated in retrospect by AR in "Winter Holiday," which makes the watch about ten years younger than John's wristwatch.

It's always amused me in recent years to see young women wearing round their necks as items of jewellery the sort of chain that's still attached to Les' hunter, and which he used to hang it from his waistcoat buttonhole.

Of course, those were the days when the bottom button of one's waistcoat was always left undone, too (which I understand was taken up by the nobs in deference to Prinny's paunch -- although someone might care to correct me on that.) I don't wear a waistcoat very often these days, but, reactionary that I am, when I do I still leave that bottom button undone....
