I certainly remember cheap wrist watches where you could prise open the back, and remove the entire mechanism. So the hands were exposed and, if one was loose, you could lose it. That kind of watch was also not at all water proof- in fact, my parents' pre-war watches weren't water proof and I suspect that many watches at the time were not. So another reason for John to keep his watch in the tent, not on his wrist.
